Buying a carpet and getting it right.

To help inform your carpet buying choice, here’s a short run down of the most frequently asked questions I hear in my Derby Carpets Store. Read all of the quetions below or jump to your specific carpet question by using the links to the right.

Q. What grade of carpet should I buy?

A. This depends on which area of your home the carpet is for. A well used family sitting room will need a heavier quality than a child’s bedroom.

Q. What colour carpet should I choose?

A. Think about any dominant colours in the room, a patterned suite or a colourful rug should be taken into consideration. How do you plan to decorate in the future? Soft neutrals and paler shades are a popular choice and give an airy spacious feel to any room. Don’t be afraid of colour though! You can add warmth with a rich cinnamon or depth with a soft aubergine tone.

Q. What style of carpet should I select?

A. The vast majority of carpets sold in the UK are plain. Because of their popularity, these carpets come in a huge range of qualities from cheap and cheerful stain resistant naturals to heavy luxury wool twists. The last year or two has seen a rise in the popularity of tweed and heather effects where the pile is made up of more than one yarn colour; this gives a subtle muted effect.

Bring in a photo of your room to give us an idea of how it looks and how you use the space, we’ll make some suggestions based on years of experience, on what looks good!

Q. How long will my carpet last?

A. This depends on how much of your hard-earned money you feel like investing. Modern carpets hardly ever wear out but appearance retention is better on heavier quality carpets. So the question to ask is how long do I want the carpet to last? Is it a quick fix or a long term purchase?

How we can help…
Our knowledgable staff can advise you on how to get the most out of your investment, perhaps a small upgrade in underlay will pay off better than jumping up a quality level?

Q. How much will it cost?

A. To calculate the cost of your carpet simply measure your room ( say for example the room measures 3.56 x 3.85 ) carpets generally come in 4 metre wide rolls so in our example you’d need to order 3.65 x 4.00 this allows 10cm or so for cutting in. 3.65 x 4.00 = 14.60 square metres. Don’t forget to allow underlay and fitting costs.

Q. What type of carpet should I choose?

A. Here’s a quick rundown of the most common carpets types:

Twist pile.
This carpet has a cut pile construction and can be made using plain or heathered yarns; They come in a vast range of qualities and finishes, and are, by a mile, the most popular type of carpet sold in the UK at the moment.

Loop pile.
These carpets are extremely hardwearing and practical and appearance retention is good. The looped construction gives a chunky texture to a plain carpet.
